Spotting ATM fraud

Before using an ATM, check the machine and your surroundings. Common methods of ATM fraud include:

• Skimming devices: attachments that copy information from a card.
• False keypads: overlays that may record a PIN.
• Trapped cards: situations in which an attacker offers “help” to obtain the card or its details.

Check that the card reader and keypad appear securely fitted and look for unusual attachments. If your card becomes stuck, contact your bank and do not accept help from strangers.

Choose ATMs in well-lit, busy locations, preferably at a bank. If something seems suspicious, stop and use a different machine.
