Two-factor authentication: an extra layer of protection

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second identity check when you sign in to an online account. It helps protect your email, online banking, social media and other services if someone obtains your password.

After entering your password, you may be asked for a code from an authenticator app, such as Google Authenticator, or a code sent by text message. The available options depend on the service.

A second factor reduces the risk of unauthorised access, but it is not a guarantee: some methods can still be targeted by phishing. Never share a verification code with someone who contacts you or enter it on a page you do not trust.

Enable 2FA wherever it is available, starting with your email, banking and social media accounts.
